So here’s my pet theory: at some point iTunes will be rewritten using WebKit to render the UI. I’m not saying iTunes will become a web browser ― just that the UI itself will be a WebKit view. WebKit is cross-platform and built for the future.

So, was John Gruber right? This is what I found while browsing the new iTunes Store (cool stuff, btw!):
User-Agent: iTunes/9.0 (Macintosh; Intel Mac OS X 10.5.8) AppleWebKit/531.9

It’s important to understand that iTunes is only using WebKit to render the iTunes Store and iTunes LP. The rest of the iTunes UI still remains native in Carbon.

Previous versions of iTunes had a custom native UI for viewing the iTunes Store and were definitely not WebKit based prior to iTunes 9.

It looks like this new HTML based format is triggered by the request header:

Now it should be made clear, this is not any web app. If you don’t find the site’s visuals appealing, all you need to do is look under the hood to find the beauty: this is a seriously, amazing work of art. There’s not a drop of flash on this website, from the rotating banners to the music preview player. Everything is straight HTML5, CSS3.
